10k Gold Jewelry
10K Gold Jewelry Is Cost-Effective and Beautiful
10K gold jewelry contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts. In North
America 10k is the lowest karat designation that a metal can have
and still be considered gold. However, because of the lower percentage
of gold metal, it is a cost-effective alternative to that which
has a higher gold content.
Nothing quite says luxury like gold jewelry: it's shiny, rich and
warm looking. While to some 10K gold is thought to be the discount
variety, it still forms beautiful gold jewelry.
In the U.S. and Canada gold jewelry is generally marked either
10K, 14K, 18K or 24K; while in Europe, gold is marked numerically
to indicate the percentage of gold present, so 10K gold is marked
417. Jewelry is commonly called "solid gold" if it has
at least a 10K value.
Gold Blended With Other Metals
In jewelry making, gold is often blended intentionally with other
metals, such as copper, silver, nickel and other metals to increase
it's durability. Pure gold is very soft and can be damaged with
daily wear.
Jewelers also use gold alloys to create colored gold pieces. A
gold-copper alloy produces a rose color, gold blended with palladium
or nickel results in white gold, and when mixed with silver the
gold takes on a green tint. These alloys add to the variety and
opportunity the jewelry artist has to make unique and interesting
gold pieces.
From The Jewelers Perspective
From the jeweler's perspective, gold is easier to work with than
other metals. 10K gold is durable even if it's made into very thin
wire or strips, and can be worked into any shape or size. It can
be cast, soldered, cut and molded, giving gold pieces their unique
look.
The lower gold content of 10K gold makes it a lighter color than
that which has a higher gold content. Color doesn't affect the value
of the object; it's just a matter of preference. 10K gold jewelry,
having a higher percentage of other metals, is stronger and doesn't
need to be treated as carefully as other gold jewelry.
Some jewelers feel that the paler hue of 10K gold is prettier with
certain stones than the darker or tinted colors. Again, it's a matter
of preference and what determines the market value of a piece of
10K gold jewelry is the craftsmanship and design.
Cleaning 10K Gold
10K gold jewelry can be cleaned
relatively easy and inexpensively with a mild dish washing detergent
and warm water. Vigorous scrubbing is a bad idea because it will
scratch the gold and any gemstones, which will definitely make the
piece look dull and defeat the cleaning process.
Toothpaste and baking soda are never good alternatives!
Anything in a paste form can get caught in small crevices, and which,
when dry, looks gummy, makes the gold dull and is difficult to remove.
Final Thoughts
While 10K gold doesn't have the gold content or, seemingly, the
status, it is certainly an economical way to own and wear gold jewelry
that won't wear off or tarnish like gold-filled or gold-plated jewelry.
10K gold jewelry is a less-expensive, durable and beautiful choice
for everyday jewelry.
